CHamoru Participation

CHamoru Vietnam War Veterans stories

More than 6,000 soldiers from Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands served during the Vietnam War. Of these, seventy-seven soldiers died in Vietnam—the highest per capita rate compared to any other group during the war.

Click on each photo to visit the narratives of three CHamoru soldiers—Martin Manglona, Nicolas (Nick) D. Francisco, and Juan (John) Cruz Benavente—based on interviews conducted with Dr. Evyn Lê Espiritu Gandhi in 2018.

The Vietnam War facilitated unexpected intimacies between CHamoru and Vietnamese communities. Raymond T. Baza, who served in the US Army Psychological Operations from 1969-1972, met his wife Lee T. Baza in Vietnam.
